biography/ies	lebt seit 1991 als freischaffender künstler in salzburg.
abstract	i was born into a big, dry place. the marlboro man was my neighbor and his landscape my backyard. the glorified cowboys of hollywood were like the friends of my grandfather. i took space for granted and sunlight was a given. when we traveled we traveled for days because the space between places demanded it. returning home was always a descent as we lived at sea level; [everything eventually ends up in the ocean.] the sun, where i lived, set directly into the ground; the horizon was always the last thing to be seen and one could recognize the curving of the earth; such is visual perception in a flat place. when traveling through the desert, one feels the illusion, regardless of ground speed, of standing still. unlike in a mountainous terrain, the horizon in the desert changes only slightly through the hours and you never reach the point ahead; sort of like chasing heat-waves on the pavement. an important part of my summers in arizona were the camping trips we would take. in america, especially in the west, one can simply put on a back-pack, walk into the wilderness, catch a fish, build a fire and sleep on the ground. a wilderness experience had much to do with adventure; being challenged, scared and unsettled. upon moving to europe in the late 80's, i quickly realized that the wilderness in europe has been filtered through centuries of history and tradition and that the camping culture is far from the unpredictable and direct exchange with nature as it was in my childhood. the world of the "camper", especially in austria, is one of comfort, predictability, and a desperate attempt at a home away from home; the wilderness is avoided at all costs.
